You may have a little discomfort. But whatever you take for your headaches to go away will help. Root planing just means a little deeper clean. You are just going to feel a little tender for about 24 - 48 hours.
It depends on your level of pain tolerance and how advanced your gum disease is. I would recommend taking some Ibuprofen prior to your appointment and then keep taking it for the rest of the day and the next. Start now brushing the gums and flossing deep around each tooth, even if it bleeds a lot. The more you can start healing the gums, the faster the healing will be after the appointment. I would also recommend you get an electric type brush (rechargeable). I like the Oral B Braun, but Sonicare is also fine. When you brush, make sure to keep the soft bristles down into the gum, where the tooth and gum meet. If it bleeds that is just telling you it needs more attention to get the plaque off daily and it will eventually heal.
This procedure is usually done with local anesthesia. Pain and discomfort during the procedure should be very minimal assuming you are completely numb. Of course, you will be receiving multiple injections in these areas, so discomfort during the anesthesia is something to consider as well. The end result will be a much more thorough cleaning of your teeth below the gumline. This will rid your mouth of calculus (calcified plaque) and pathogenic bacteria. When the numbness resolves, expect soreness in all areas that were "scaled and root planed." The soreness can be reduced by taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen after the appointment for a few days.
There is another procedure call OFD or Open Flap Debridement. It is similar to the usual "scaling and root planing," except that your gums are actually flapped away from the teeth/bone. This allows direct access and visualization of the problem areas. This surgery has much more soreness and healing time.
Good luck. It will be worth it in the end!
