My father was highly effected by canker sores for years, due to any tomato. He was just allergic to tomatoes. When he didn't eat tomatoes he would go for a while okay. He then was on Tagamet for a stomach ulcer. This cleared up the acid problem which was adverse to the tomatoes. That was when he was in his 60's. Since then he eats tomatoes and no canker sores. He is 82.
I've had canker sores all my life too. When I was 9, I had 10 canker sores along one cheek. They are very painful. I am allergic to nuts... specifically walnuts. Being on a farm, we had black walnut trees and thus, a lot of deserts with walnuts. I avoid nuts.
Maybe the Rx medication used to combat herpes will help with the cankers. Ask your son's doctor about that.
I used to get canker sores all the time. My are caused by acid. I can't drink juice, eat oranges, pineapple and a lot of other fruit. The lady with the tomato story has some good advice. I started putting peroxide on a Q-tip then dabbing on the canker sore. They would go away pretty quick and the pain left too. I was told by a lady at the orthodontist to gargle with peroxide DO NOT SWALLOW!.
I would watch all the foods that he does eat and get an allergy tests to see what he is allergic too.
