For one, take a deep, deep breath. Then, believe that pain and embarassment is NOT going to be an issue. Yet, anyway. XD

If it is your first visit then most likely they will just be evaluating you. They could do a little cleaning, but this is nothing major and really doesn't hurt. They do all the work. Everything at the dentist's is usually a little uncomfortable, but that's all. And thank god it's usually fairly quick! If you do have to get teeth pulled and braces put on, then they will not be performing any of that right away. They'll probably just talk to you about it.

I've had teeth pulled, braces, and right now I was browsing the forum because I just had two of my bottom wisdom teeth out. The best thing to remember is that the 'worse' the procedure is, the better it will probably be for you. They can numb your mouth easy and give you drugs to relax you and you just chill out or nap with your mouth open.

The braces will make your mouth sore. That is the worst time I've had with dentists/orthodontist. But it doesn't hurt in the office. Just when the braces are actually trying to adjust after visits.

A final confidence booster: dentists see a LOT of teeth. This is a garantee that he or she HAS seen worse teeth than yours. :D

Brush before you go.
Nah, getting fillings isn't really that bad at all, provided anything is even wrong with you. I seriously doubt they would be removing teeth unless you are already in extreme pain due to an exposed root or if you need your wisdom teeth pulled.

In all likeliness what will happen is someone will come in and clean your teeth. Then, the dentist will check your teeth for any problems. If there are problems then you'll get them fixed, which isn't really THAT bad, if not then you're free to go. All the dentists I've ever had have been pretty nice, perhaps a bit critical of my flossing habits, but nice none the less.
It TOTALLY depends on the dentist.
If you get a nice/sensitive one, it makes all the difference!
I relate to your anxiety!
