What does the shot feel like when they have to numb your tooth to prepare for dental work?

Question:
I have to get 4 fillings on Monday, and a root canal sometime after that. I just want to know what it feels like, because i'm petrified.

Answers:
OK, I just had that EXACT same thing done like 2 hours ago. The numbing medicine isn't bad because first they put a q-tip on the area where the numbing needle goes with this numbing liquid so you can't even feel the needle go in. They tend to do 1 shot on the outer part of the teeth and one on the inner. Fillings aren't bad at all. After you're numbed you just close your eyes and they go to work drilling and filling. I only had to get 1 done today and it took about a half in hour. So you'll probably take a couple hors. The root canal is a different story. I had only 1 root canal and it took almost 2 and a half hours. Now you DEFINITELY don't want to look while they're doing the root canal. Either ask for some headphones and music or bring you're iPod like I did. That way you don't hear the drill they use or the needle that they use to clear the root. You'll want to keep your eyes closed because they stick inch long needles in there and then leave them there for x-rays and stuff. If you feel anything after they numb you just raise your hand or give a little moan and they'll add more. After all they are dealing with the nerve of your tooth and the very roots of it. There's going to be lots of pushing and pulling but it doesn't hurt, you just feel the pressure. Honestly, the worst part for me was the assistant who was going to town with the thing that suck the saliva out of your mouth with the vacuum. Honestly, just bring your iPod, clothes your eyes, and it will be over before you know it. I was freaking out too, and it wasn't half as bad as my mind made it out to be.
4 needles, and i didn't feel them, it depends where though
Make sure they do a topcial anesthetic first-its a numbing gel that they stick on a big qtip and then hold it on that spot for a good couple minutes. This way, your already semi-numb before the shot! After that, the shot really isn't so bad. Its a little pinch, but nothing to worry about. It only takes a second. I've had several fillings myself recently so trust me, I know! And I hate the dentist. The anticipation is the worst.
Also, if your nervous when you get there, dont be afraid to tell your dentist. They will walk you though it and before you know it, you'll be all done!
Good luck and don't worry about it. :)
If your dentist(or dental hygenist depending on who administers the shots) is decent it shouldn't feel much more than a very minor pinch. They also should have a swap that will partially numb your gum before they even inject you. Just a slightly tart kind of jam like substance that they swab over the gums.
u feel a little pinch then thats all. then it feels like its swollen. but it doesnt hurt at all i promise. its kinda tingly too, like when your leg falls asleep. dont be scared, no need to be nervous about something like that! good luck :)
you dont feel nothing. first they numb the part with liquid that taste like strawberries, then the part gets numb and then they inject you and you dont feel crap! nothing whatsoever. Now the root canal... i dont know.. i was asleep when they did that to me. And to be honest... I felt nothing when they took my wisdom teeth out.. but when then freaking did the root canal... omg! I WAS ASLEEP! and freaking felt it! but then i went back to sleep and forgot about it. And the filling dont hurt.
Be afraid, be very afraid.
Nah, just kidding. Don't fret so much, it doesn't even hurt that bad and when you are done you are going to wonder what all the fuss was about.
Everyone else above me is absolutely right!
The injection need not hurt at all. I have a great dentist that, after applying a clove based topical to the area, inserts the liquid from the syringe VERY SLOWLY into the gum. He instructs me to lift my hand if I feel any discomfort and he slows down the injection. It takes some time (why others don't do it) but I am grateful he does it this way.
Hmmm well I just got it done. They will give you some topical so you won't feel it at all. My dentist wiggled my cheek to try to get it deeeep in there and I couldn't even feel it haha.
So you should be, that sounds horrible, good luck though.
I hate pain but it's something we all have to suffer at times. It helps to think of the even more horribly painful things that could happen and thank your lucky stars it's only temporary.
Hope this helps
