If your talking about yourself, you need to get it fixed. Having a root canal means infection and decay has gone as far as the roots of your teeth and inorder to "save" your tooth from possible extraction, your doctor must kill the nerves.
Possible consequences, is losing your tooth, extreme pain, severe infection where you might need to be hospitalized, and due to the decay and infection you may start to have chronic bad breath untill you get it fixed and it can spread to other teeth.
Infection, pain, weak tooth. Get it finished. Nothing good will come of it if you don't.

this is how the feeling would be, on the initial removal of the pulp tissue of the nerve, you might not feel pain afterwards, the dentist put a dressing and temporary filling material, and asks you to come back at a given period of time.
whats happenning inside is the nerve is removed and the root are initially filed for proper access of the whole root, the dressing are usually of phenol based and will last for only at a given time that is why you are asked to come back. The succeeding sesions would be filing to enlarge the root canal at the same time to cleanse them and free from any bacteria.
if by this time, you opt not to visit your dentist, what would happen is after the potency of the dressing apllied wears out, sepsis may occur gradually, producing a chronic type of infection, resulting to throbbing pain and swelling.
