Just got a temporary filling (IRM)?

Question:
I just got a temporary filling (IRM) for sedative purposes because my tooth has been sensitive from a shallow filling (shouldn't need a root canal) ever since it was done 2 years ago. It is a still a good tooth and we've tried replacing it, adjusting the occlusion, etc... but that is besides the point...

I don't remember *too* much about temporary fillings when I went to school other than what they're made of, how long they can stay in, how to mix them, etc...

But my question is, can anybody tell me (or at least remind me) what the do's and don't's about what to do when you have a temporary filling.

All the dentist told me is that when I'm flossing to not pull the floss back up but to slide it out.

Anything else I should know?

Answers:
Depending on how much natural tooth structure remains, I wouldn't bite on anything hard with that tooth so that you don't fracture it and render it unrestorable hence needing an extraction. Otherwise, there really isn't anything that different that you need to do besides understand that it is only temporary and trying to keep it in there forever will likely lead to decay and a root canal.
