You know, my sister tried the Crest Whitening strips and she too saw no results. I honestly do not know of any cheap treatment other than the real treatment that you would have to get done at the dentist's office, which can be very pricey if you are not well funded at the moment lol.
I just got my braces removed last Monday and my teeth needed some serious whitening. So I went to Walgreen's and bought Crest White Strips Premium Plus. It cost about $40. It is a ten-day treatment. You use the strips twice a day for thirty minutes each. I have seen a major improvement and I've only used half of them! The reason I can see such a difference is because I only got my top braces off so I can compare the color of my top teeth with my bottom teeth. Good luck!
I use the Crest Whitestrips --Dental Whitening System and that works for me. The ones that come with the strips for the lower part and the upper part. I just leave them on for a little while longer then they say to. I know they taste disgusting but mine work. You can also try the overnight Crest Whitening strips.

What I am wondering is when did you have your teeth cleaned last? They work best if you use them right after you get your teeth cleaned as any stain or buildup (tartar or plaque) you currently have on your teeth will block their ability to work. Also, don't use fluoride toothpaste before putting the strips on (same reason). Also, you shouldn't drink or eat any dark colored foods or drink for 1/2 hour after you use a whitening product since it gets absorbed by the teeth and stains them again.
Overall I would say that most of my patient's have had some measure of success with the Crest Whitestrips, some more than others. Our office uses Crest Supreme which are much stronger than what you can buy in a drugstore and don't cost that much more ($60.00 vs $30.00). The strips are probably your best low price alternative, much less than in office whitening or custom trays (about $500.00). Most whitening toothpastes just remove stain on the surfaces of your teeth and therefore are not so effective. Whatever method you use it will not whiten your teeth for life, as you age your teeth will get darker and may need to be whitened again. You should see results within the first week if not sooner.

PS- Bright white teeth aren't really normal, when you look at some people (like hollywood movie stars) they have had crowns or veneers to make them super white. Most people have a slightly off white shade. Also, if you have a really tough stain it might be due to medication you took as a child.
