I am having a dentist checkup soon. What is the procedure?

Question:
I have a hole in my tooth, and was wondering if they were going to stick any needles in there saying "does this hurt." What is a check up like?

Answers:
They are more than likely going to put a filling in your tooth, unless it is really big and bothering you.. like air bothering you or something cold or hot.for instance -then they will give you a root canal.

They will take an xray of your tooth then look at it and then they will give you "laughing gas" (which is awesome)

or they may just numb your mouth with orajel type medication then they will give you a shot (novacaine)to numb your roots and everything...

it's not that bad..just the noise gets to you.. :) because they will have to drill your tooth either way to get the decayed part of your tooth out, that way they can save your tooth.

Trust me, Teeth are not meant to be pulled. The denist is supposed to do everything they can to save your tooth.

Good luck.
They will x-ray that and your other teeth. They'll also use a little pokey tool to find soft spots that could be cavities. Then they will drill out any decayed tissue and fill it with a special substance. (You'll probably have to make another appointment for that).

They will give you a shot of novacaine, which will make your mouth numb, so you won't feel anything that they do.
A checkup is usually just that.a checkup...here are some things that they might do.

Cleaning - Someone will scrape the tartar off of your teeth and professionally clean them so they are nice and bright and slippery :-)

Checking - The dentist will check all of your teeth with instruments and possibly xrays to see if you have any cavities or other problems.

Appointment - Usually if dentists find a cavity or two, they will want you to make an appointment to get them filled.

You shouldn't need to get any needles during your checkup, but talk to your dentist if you are nervous or anxious so that he knows ahead of time. He may even be able to give you something to relax abit and make the whole process easier for the both of you.

All in all, a checkup and cleaning isn't the most fun thing to do, you might feel some pain now and then and maybe be a little sore afterwards, but it's generally not as bad as you ever think it will be. And it certainly beats living with a toothache or having rotting teeth in your mouth for a long period of time.

Hope this helps! :-)
