My tooth is killing me...?

Question:
I chipped my tooth on sunday afternoon and I just got to the dentist today. I did this before and what he did is put filling in the whole. the thing is he had to grind my tooth down some for it to stick. it hurts to breath, to talk and to drink and eat too. I took some Motrin (spelling?) and its helped some. is there anything else I can do? when should it stop hurting? they used laughing gas while in was in the chair and that kept me numb for a while. but now I don't know HELP! like on the pain scale it was a 7. my teeth are naturally very sencative could that have anything to do with the pain? I just don't remember it hurting this bad last time.

Answers:
It depends on how or why you chipped your tooth. Teeth are very strong and not easy to break. If you had sudden trauma to your tooth, it is possible that you caused a small fracture in your tooth. Often these are not a major problem, but can be sensitive at first. If you are chipping teeth often without knowing an exact cause, it could mean that you are grinding your teeth, in which case, cracks are likely. Also, when they drill your tooth it causes vibrations. In a tooth that has been traumatized, it is just adding insult to injury. Keep an eye on the tooth and the surrounding gum tissue. If you find any bumps that develope, call your dentist, it could mean your fractured the root above the gum line.
