Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years and we often do the permanent for adults that had their teeth straightened later in life because the do move back. It is simple and you will never know it is there. We put a small rounded arch bar behind the bottom teeth and cover it with a tooth colored material. It is very thin so it takes up little space in your mouth. On the top we do the same. But only for the top 6-8 teeth. This way they do not move and also when your wisdom teeth come in they will not kick your front teeth out of place.
Most of my patients op for this so they don't have to wear a retainer every day. Some want it so they can be sure their teeth never go back to the bucked teeth they had to begin with. I did this on my neice and she is 20 and still won't let me take it off. You can remove these when you get older if you want to to make flossing easier, but most people do not. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie
I have one on my lower teeth and i forget its there 99% of the time. I wish they had given me one for the top too.
I have a permanent retainer on the bottom. Its so much better then the regular retainers. They glue a small wire to the back of your teeth to keep them in line. You'll forget that its there after a few days. It doesn't affect they way you talk at all and you can eat normally and chew gum. All you have to do is be careful when you brush your teeth and floss.
I don't really know what permanent retainers are. When I was told I could stop wearing mine, they put in just a bar along the back of my lower teeth to restrict them from moving, a little. It was just attached to the back of my teeth and it just hindered flossing. You can chew gum with this type of retainer. It's not as expensive as the removable kind, either. See this question for more information: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?... Good luck! You'll be fine.
a girl i met in my driving class has permanent retainers (i didnt know about those until she told me) and she told me that its a good idea to get those bc they will be in your mouth permanently (idk the details) and so you dont have to mess w/ remembering to put on regular retainers etc. i have braces now so idk what kind of retainers ill get (hopefully invisalign and ill ask about permanent bc i dont want my teeth to move in the future)
i dont think they will be a big problem - you can prob. eat and talk normally (bc the girl i talked to is perfectly fine and she doesnt have any problems). my assumption is that theyre probably more expensive than regular retainers though.
