Hiccups are caused by a muscle near the top of your lungs, which is freaking out. I don't think anyone knows why it starts, but that's what causes the hiccups.
To stop the hiccups, you need to give the muscle a chance to calm down. You do this by taking a big breath, holding it, and pushing out.
This will work. Seriously.
