How about a balloon(preferably one of those long skinny ones) and a few rubber bands. Then form the balloon into different sections using the rubber bands, by squeezing one section of the balloon you force the air into the next section, pretty much what the heart does with the blood.

Use 2 aquarium pumps and an automatic switch to alternate from one to the other at the normal speed of heartbeat. They will represent the R/L sides of heart muscle. There's your idea...build on it.
