I am only 31 with high cholesterol. I work for an Internist and when I told him, he said it is probably hereditary, and there was nothing I could do except drink red wine. So I have been, and it hasn't gotten any higher. Maybe this works who knows. It's good for me either way.
Exercise regularly.Reduce alcohol intake.
It is probably just genetics but there are several different types of medication available. You may want to consider having your doctor change it to a different type and see if it helps.
