i have a heart condition, i take atenolol, is it safe to take antacids?
Question:
Answers:
None of the antacids such as the H2 blockers (Pepcid, Zantac, Tagamet), proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, Aciphex, Protonix), or buffers (TUMS, Rolaids, milk of magnesia, Maalox) should exacerbate any heart conditions or interfere with atenolol. You are safe.
EDIT: To address sunnyblonde4u's comment. the buffers may be listed as having a drug interaction, but that is because they theoretically reduce the bioavailability of the atenolol. However, this is negligible and is exceedingly unlikely to be of any clinical significance.
