if you have had regular periods and they suddenly have changed by being too heavy, or skipping months you should see your doctor. you may be producing too much or too little estrogen or progesterone. every month you miss your endometrial linning gets thicker. and then when you have a period it can be very heavy because then not only are you shedding a layer for that period but the subsequent layer can break up and you will bleed on top of bleeding. this can last a normal cycle or for several months. if your period is unusually heavy after having skipped a few or your cycle lasts more than 10 days you need to see your GYN immediately. you do not want to ignore it and then develope endometrial hyperplasia which is just a thickning of the endometrial linning which left untreated can become cancerous.
