Like all medicines which has reached its expiration date, it loses its potency. Cipro is an antibiotic, and as such sould not be used after it has expired, unless that is all you have, and you are in a combat zone, and unable to get a fresh supply.
avoid anthrax
that question has been addressed a couple of time lately in the news. Florida for one is now going to require pharmaceutical companies to eliminate or put more realistic expiration date on drugs, which is in most cases many years after the date printed on the bottle
Nothing. However, to be safe, ALL outdated medicines should be tossed and replaced with fresh ones. Cipro will probably remain potent enough to do it's intended job for months past the expiration date - but only a desperate fool would count on it!
As a pharmacist, what we can say for sure is that once a drug goes past it's expiration date, there is no way to ensure or guarantee that the drug will be efficacious or safe.
That being said, it doesn't necessarily mean that the drug won't work either. It's just that the drug's manufacturer can't guarantee that it is still "good to use".
The truth of the matter, is that many people still use outdated, expired medications. I'm not saying it's what I recommend, but hopefully this gives you a little more info on making your decision.
