Anyone else worried about the bird flu?
Question:
Answers:
It is not unreasonable to be concerned about Avian Influenza, however, since a human to human transmission vector has NOT developed, perhaps you are be overly worried.
The receptors in humans to which the Avian Influenza virus binds are located deep in the lungs, in contrast with the receptors to which "the flu" binds, which are located in the throat. This is why it takes prolonged exposure to infected fowl for a human to become infected.
NO humans have died from eating contaminated birds - NONE. There is NO reason to stockpile food. There are currently no vaccinations available for this strain of flu, but there are large supplies of antiviral drugs available.
Is the public taking this threat seriously enough? That is not the issue, per se. The real issue is: Is the government taking this seriously enough, and the answer is.maybe. We won't know unless the strain mutates.
I would be MUCH more concerned about Islamic militants than about Avian Flu.
