Can children with ADHD ever come off of medications?

My son is 11 and has ADHD with emotional disturbance. He takes Adderall 2x's daily, and Depakote 1 daily. He is very immature, and is learning delayed. I'm fed up with medicating him, and he doesn't sleep well at night, and this doesn't help his condition any either. The Doctors just keep pulling out the prescription pad, and keep medicating him. He was even given Zoloft and had a psychotic episode that almost caused him to kill himself, and it was a ho hum attitude, just don't give him that med. I'm frustrated and watching my child's confidence and self esteem dissappear is not helping anyone especially him, anyone know of an alternative treatment for him?

There are many cases that kids have stopped meds by controlling diet. There is a book "A Mind At A Time" it share in non meds. Gives you help in understanding your childs unique behavior. My friend and I have done Reiki and Sound Energy on a boy with similar problems. He is doing much better. He is also using herb supplements and homepath remedies. Finding him a good herbologist or homepath and changing eating behavior is hard work and must keep journal to see changes. There are many alternatives and checking websites for holistic healers and asking at local health food stores and even Chiropractor office. Also having the boy attuned to Reiki level 1 can help himself. I have found that these children are very special and need the attention to keep their spirit alive. Some even believe these kids are the Indigo Children.

So watch him and keep a journal and research the diet factor. If you look at the Natures Sunshine Website you will find a list of practioners that could answer your questions also. some kids do go off totally and others like my son who is now 20yrs is still on adderall and doing very well. my son has been on meds since he was 4yrs of age he also has adhd w/hyperactivity & mentally handicapt. so in my sons case and most likely yours he will have to stay medicated. BUT you better find a different physcian, find one w/a good reputation w/children w/adhd and one that treats the problem and does'nt keep going after meds to keep your child sadatied.

Try switching from regular milk to soy milk. But don't just drop the meds all at once. he has to go off under a doctor's supervision.
