what's a good exercise for lower abs when you have a herniated disc and cant do leg lifts?

Question:
I do many crunches but they only work the upper abs. I get back pain when legs are not supported, ie: leg lifts or hip raises
Answers:
Try putting your legs against a wall while lying on the floor. Then contract your lower abdomen muscles if you know how to isolate those only. Of course it's ok to work other muscles at the same time if that's how you have to do it. Also, you can isolate and contract your lower abdomen muscles simply while you are sitting down in a desk chair at the computer (like I'm doing right now!); just remember to hold each muscle contraction for a few seconds at a time, and work your way up from there. I'm not sure if it's as effective as hip raises, but you should be able to feel the workout if you're doing it right.
