what is water retention?

Edema is the increase of extracellular fluid in any organ. Generally, the amount of ECF is in balance. Increased secretion of fluid into the interstitium or impaired removal of this fluid may be associated with edema. Mechanisms causing increased secretion are inflammation, increased hydrostatic pressure and abnormalities in osmolality; abnormal removal can be found in low oncotic pressure and abnormal pressure on the lymphatic system.

Your body is holding excess water.
Usually it happens around your menstrual cycle. It also happens if you eat too much salt :-)
Just what it says it is, retention is to retain. If you take a lot of sodium in your diet, you will retain water. It makes you look puffy in the face and bloated everywhere else. People that eat salty stuff, drink a lot of coffee and diet sodas, alcohol have problems with retaining water. When you drink these diuretics, your body will hold onto water so it doesn't dehydrate.similar to the way your body will hold onto fat if it thinks it's starving and thus, the starvation diet doesn't actually work. Are you just curious or do you think you are retaining water?
