What causes elevated ammonia levels in your system?

Question:
A member of my family is currently in ICU for treatment.
Answers:
Ammonia results from the breakdown of protein in the body. Most ammonia in the body forms when protein is broken down by bacteria in the intestinal tract. The liver normally converts ammonia into urea, which is then eliminated in urine.

Ammonia levels rise in the blood when the liver is unable to convert ammonia to urea. This may occur because of cirrhosis or severe hepatitis. When excess amounts of ammonia build up in the blood, symptoms of abnormal brain function (encephalopathy), such as unclear thinking, extreme sleepiness, a characteristic hand tremor (asterixis), or coma may develop.
hope your family member gets well soon. Hope this info helps.
