physical therapists?

Question:
what is your scope of practice. what types of people do you treat?

Answers:
"Who can get Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy is a health related service that is available to anyone and everyone in need. Many states are now direct access, which means you do not need a Dr.'s prescription to see a PT. The problem is, many doctors are unaware of what we offer, so you will not get the best medical advice concerning us from many doctors. Call a local therapist and tell them what is going on and they will let you know if PT can benefit you.

What can PT do for You?

The following is different for different conditions, but most apply for all!

Did you know that our education includes: gross anatomy with cadaver lab, exercise physiology, wound care, microbiology, cardiopulmonary, functional anatomy, neuroanatomy, and pathology (and more). We are well educated in all these areas. This is because we must be able to refer you to other health professionals/specialists when we see other things going on with you. For example, you may be experiencing low back pain that is referred from a kidney infection. We have the knowledge to diagnose that your problem is not related to the musculoskeletal or nervous system and will refer you for more testing to a specialist. Many people think we are personal trainers, athletic trainers, or exercise physiologists...but we offer so much more. We are trained to work with people with various pathological conditions and offer a wide variety of treatment options that separates us from the rest. Below is a short list of some of what offer.

1) We get you the patient to a level of functional independence, meaning getting you to a level where you can do things on your own or with as little help as possible. We'll push you very hard to get to the best level you can. We want you to depend on yourself as much as possible. After serious injury it is easy to rely on others because of many factors, we want to try to get you to rely on yourself as much as your condition allows. Independence in life is a main key for continued health and psychological well-being.

2) We teach you ways to prevent a more serious injury before it happens, or after injury, prevent it from recurring. Prevention is a key area of rehabilitation that many health insurance companies cannot understand. Billions could be saved by offering a model based on prevention. The health professional field understands this and we are really focusing more attention here (vitamins, exercise, healthy diet). For example, you hurt your back; we show you lifting techniques and exercises to strengthen your back which prevent future more severe injuries.

3) We teach your family members how to care for you. For example, teach a family member how to help you with your home exercises, how to safely transfer you if you are unable to do this for yourself. By teaching family members how to care for you, we are taking steps to ensure that you will be working hard at home to get better, as well as not overdoing it. The key to rehabilitation is following through with treatment at home (your home program).

4) We develop a functionally relevant home program that will be challenging and stimulating to ensure that you will want to participate. We want you to be dependent on yourself to get better, not your therapist. Let me be more specific. If you aren't enjoying your home exercise, you probably won't want to do it. If you If you are only working on rehabing yourself when you see your therapist (for example 1-2 times a week), instead of daily at home, then do not expect optimal healing or recovery.

Be open and honest with your therapist. If you aren't following through with your program, then you will not see the results. Tell your therapist the problem with your program. Be open and honest!

5) We educate you on your condition. EDUCATION IS INTEGRAL! Ask questions. Be involved. Our job is to help you to become better equipped with life before and after injury or pathology. If we don't know the immediate answer to a tough question, I guarantee you that we will find it. "
