What would be the best method to ask people to come to a free seminar about Qi Gong / Chi Kung?
Question:
To me, I think 99% of the public haven't even heard about it. How can I make the campaign/ad appealing to people so they would listen to a qi gong master talk for 2 hours? We do not want to plunk down a lot of money and find out only 10 people will show up at the free seminar.
Any constructive suggestion would be great!
Answers:
I agree - you can't have the seminar any longer than 30 minutes. If you want to have it longer, than advertise a 30 minute talk on stress managment. In addition they need something for coming to your talk - like "learn how you can significantly reduce stress with just a few simple steps"
You can have him talk for 2hrs if you want. The key though is to get them to the talk - take an intermission at 30 minutes and let them know that if they would like to learn more the talk will continue for another 45 minutes. Peoples ears stop listening when their butt hurts. Follow this up with a 30 min question / answer. You now have 2 hours.
Make sure to have some snacks, drinks since they may not be expecting to stay and get hungry or thirsty.
The key is that people will only come to your seminar if they think it will help them. So what do people want help with? Stress, pain, wieght loss (addictions). Focus on these issues.
From personal experience - flyers on wall suck - they are too passive to work. You have to personally invite people to the free seminar. This means you have to stand outside of your local pharmacy, discount store, grocery stores, etc and ask people if they would be interested in attending a free seminar on stress reduction. Most will say "no" - 95% in fact, but 5% will say yes. Of this group, only 30% will show. This number is only if you call them to confirm their seat - so, you must get a phone number and name, in addition to how many will come. If they won't give you a number, they aren't coming. The night before the talk call them personally to confirm their seat and the number of people coming. How ever many you confirm - expect about 1/2 of those to show.
Make sure the talk is fun and informative during the first 30 minutes, or they won't stay for the rest of the talk.
Good luck.
Other Answers:
Make flyers and post them in health food stores, farmers markets, grocery stores, massage clinics, spas, gyms, health clubs, public libraries, etc. as allowed.
To make it more interesting, do not have the qi gong master TALK for two hours. Have him/her spend part of that time demonstrating, and maybe even leading a group exercise or two so that people can start to get the feel of what qi gong is!
Find out if there is a "shopper" newspaper in your area that offers inexpensive ads. Check with the local newspapers to see if they have a calendar listing community events, some even have a health-related calendar where you could put the time, date, place, and title of your event (for free!).
See if there is a community access cable channel that offers free listings of local events.
Write up a press release and send it to all your local newspapers, radio and TV stations. Be sure it is in their hands about two-three weeks before the event so there is time to schedule it in when it best fits their needs!
I suppose you could advertise the seminar to local skeptics groups and any associations of actual medical professionals. They should flock down to hear exactly what nonsense about "energy" and "harmony" your speaker is passing off as actual healing.
Just ask them
