How is herbalism practised in the uk? Is it the same as chinese herbalism but with locally grown herbs?

Question:
I went to a chinese herbalist with a medical problem. I liked her holistic approach.
Her diagnosis ("blocked energies") was spot on.
But the treatment although quite effective was impractical and inconvenient.
She prescribed bags of dried herbs, one to be boiled each day to produce a pint of foul tasting liquid to be drunk each day.
When I initially protested she offered me a tablets option but the variety and quantity of pills was so vast that I would have been downing pills 24/7 plus she said fresh herbs were more effective (as well as cheaper) and it was easier to make up a prescription to my specific requirements.
I gave up after one week.
But the results were quite promising..
What I want to know is whether uk herbalism
1. takes the same integrated approach.
2. Is as effective in diagnosis, but
3. More practical in treatment.
What forms do prescriptions take?

Answers:
'Western' herbalism is quite different. There are lots of herbs in China that were never native here in Europe. The chinese have been practicing herbalism for thousands of years, whereas here in Europe, herbalism is only a few hundred years old, therefore not as much experience with the herbs as the chinese have. You shouldn't be amazed how well they work, because that is what herbs do and many modern medicine is nothing but derivatives of these herbs. Some herbs can actually be toxic, cause miscarriage, make you throw up or go to the loo all the time and can cause even death! It is not a subject to take lightly and you should only ingest herbs as prescribed by a herbalist. Obviously a western herbalist would not be qualified to practice chinese herbalism, unles this person was trained in chinese herbalism, as it is (like I said before) very different. Even their diagnostic methods are different (tongue, pulse). From all that information the herbalist can make diagnosis. I say, grin and bear it, the tea is doing you good so I'm sure you can put up with it for a while
Good answer Luv

Yes the "tea" tastes foul, but it really gets better when you get used to it :) Mind you I didn't find it helped so I didn't go back for another lot! lol

UK herbalism uses the holistic approach.
The diagnosis of blocked energy will cover just about anything! From my own experience I would say that I was not totally convinced that my diagnosis was correct. The herbs are usually imported I think.
Practical? Well it really depends on your lifestyle and committment to the whole process.
1. it takes a holistic approach but from a different background. Chinese medicine goes back 2500 years. The theory stands alone and is based on energy 'Qi' rather than the mechanistic/mind model of western medicine.
2. Some things work for some and others do for others.
3. Personally, i prefer chinese meds anyday.
4. Poultices, teas, tinctures, bathsoaks, cooking with herbs.

Chinese medicine has its roots in Taoist thought. It is part of the Eight Pillars of taoism. Food can be used as medicine. Mail me if you want more info. It's a bit late now to go digging but there are some good basic books on chinese dietary therapy out there.
Frankincense essential oil will also move Qi. Other essential oils have medicinal use too in line with chinese meds theory.Again, mail me if you want more info.
