what would be some causes of Iodine defficiency or malabsorbtion?

I have always used iodized salt yet recently found out im severely deficient iodine which led to thyroid problems,what could have caused this malabsorbtion?

Answers:
Found this sentence at the web site below: If you have an under-active thyroid, try and avoid large amounts of raw cabbage, peaches, pears, spinach and Brussels sprouts as they may block the absorption of iodine.

Thought that was interesting. I would suggest going to a naturopath so they could determine if the iron deficiency imbalanced the thyroid, or the other way around.
