When applied locally along with lemon juice, it is claimed that it helps in eradicating ringworms, eczema and other skin diseases. It has also been tried successfully by some naturopaths in the treatment of leucoderma.
Tulsi has antioxidant properties, and helps boost the immune system fight off damaging free radicals that lead to disease and ageing. A prime herb in ayurveda, the juice of the leaves purportedly gives relief in common cold, fever, bronchitis, cough, digestive complaints, etc. The oil of tulsi has been traditionally used to treat earaches and snake or scorpion bites. The seeds are used in curing urinary problems. To function as an aphrodisiac, powdered tulsi root is consumed with clarified butter (ghee).
The herb is purportedly also useful in teeth disorders, especially pyorrhea. Tulsi leaves, the most used part of the herb, purportedly serve as a nerve tonic, sharpen the memory, strengthen the stomach and induce copious perspiration. Sun dried and powdered tulsi leaves have been used for brushing teeth. They have also been mixed with mustard oil to be used as toothpaste. This purportedly preserves dental health, counteracts bad breath and massages the gums, while also addressing other teeth disorders.
