I've had knee surgery, and what you should do is talk to your doctor or physical therapist and see what he or she says.
Make sure you follow through on any physical therapy (PT) they prescribe, it really helps. When I strained my knee a year ago, I came out of the PT with my knee BETTER than before the injury.
Probably you should get a knee brace to start, and take it easy. Try some easy jogging at first, and if your knee takes that OK, run some harder. When you get back on the court, make sure your buddies know you're recovering from an injury and don't play too aggressively at first, and you should be fine.
A buddy of mine also had his ACL replaced, and now hikes, runs, cycles competitively, skydives, whatever he wants.
