Why is Vitamin E good for skin?
Question:
Answers:
Vitamin E is an antioxidant. It is important for multiple reasons but primarily it prevents problems due to both the oxygen and highly reactive free-radicals in the air and lessens the effects of Ultraviolet light directly on the skin.

VITAMIN E
IMPORTANCE: Major anti-oxidant nutrient; retards cellular aging due to oxidation; supplies oxygen to the blood which is then carried to the heart and other organs; thus alleviating fatigue; aids in bringing nourishment to cells; strengthens the capillary walls & prevents the red blood cells from destructive poisons; prevents & dissolves blood clots; has also been used by doctors in helping prevent sterility, muscular dystrophy, calcium deposits in blood walls and heart conditions.
What is the difference between d-alpha and dl-alpha? Both work exactly the same in the body. There is some evidence that d-alpha is about 20% more powerful, but it costs about 400% more. In other words 800 I.U. of d-alpha would work as well as 1000 I.U. of dl-alpha. But, the 800 I.U. d-alpha would cost 4 times as much as 1000 I.U. of dl-alpha. The best buy by far is dl-alpha.
DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: May lead to a rupture of red blood cells, loss of reproductive powers, lack of sexual vitality, abnormal fat deposits in muscles, degenerative changes in the changes in the heart and other muscles; dry skin.
Vitamin E is actually two related families of chemicals, tocopherols and tocotrienols, which are further divided into alpa, beta, gamma, and delta forms (so eight in all). We can get vitamin E from a natural source, such as sunflowers, almonds, wheat germ, and liver, or we can purchase it in pill form. The difference between natural and artificial vitamin E is that the artificial form is usually only one type of tocopherol (and rarely a tocotrienol), whereas natural sources normally have a complement of tocopherols and tocotrienols.
Vitamin E does three things: it acts as an antioxidant, it helps prevent the conversion of cholesterol to plaque in the arteries, and it thins the blood. Overall, these three effects are believed to be important to cardiovascular health (though note: if you are already taking a blood thinner, you should not take more than the RDA of vitamin E). Since vitamin E is an antioxidant, it is also believed to help the skin regenerate after it has been exposed to UV rays. UV rays release free radicals (the "oxidants") and so the anti-oxidant properties of vitamin E may help reverse that harmful, wrinkle-producing process. In particular, because vitamin E is fat soluble, its most significant effect is upon fatty lipid tissues.
Besides vitamin E, there are two other major antioxidants: vitamin A and vitamin C. Most vitamin-enriched skin creams contain vitamin A and E, but few contain vitamin C. The reason is because whereas both vitamin A and E are fat-soluble and degenerate slowly, vitamin C's effects wear out quickly because the vitamin loses potency fast when exposed to heat and sunlight (such as if it is applied to the skin where it is exposed to the sun's rays). Furthermore, the acidic form (ascorbic acid) of vitamin C is not readily absorbed through the skin such as through a topical cream. Regardless, you should still include vitamin C in your diet regimen, either from foods (bell peppers, broccoli, citrus fruits) or from pills, because vitamin C directly protects the collagen that maintains your skin's youthful "plumpness".
Vitamin E is best absorbed when eating fatty foods (since it is fat-soluble). Note that because vitamin E is fat soluble, it can be stored in the body and therefore it can accumulate to toxic levels if taking mega-doses of it. This is not a major problem with a water-soluble vitamin like vitamin C.
