Have you or anyone you know tried hypnosis to help them quit smoking or anything else like that?

Answers:
I did it to quit smoking. The first time it didn't work, but that's because I didn't follow the therapist's instructions for what to do after the session. The second time I followed the instructions to the letter, and I've been a non-smoker for about 18 years after smoking a pack a day for about six years. It only took one session that lasted about an hour, and then following specific instructions afterwards, such as getting rid of all smoking-related items (cigs, ashtrays, lighters), increasing water intake, taking a deep breath and holding it for a few seconds before slowing exhaling every time I felt the urge to have a cigarette. It also helps to have alternative activities to engage in that are incompatible with smoking (things that keep your hands busy). To avoid the urge to eat in place of smoking, keep a bottle of water with you at all times, chew sugarless gum, eat healthy snacks that keeps your fingers and mouth busy such as frozen grapes or cherry tomatoes.

my aunt tried it once. it didn't work.

My dad tried hypnosis to quit smoking, but it didn't work I know about 2 people who tried it for smoking and they said it worked

I used hypnosis to quit smoking 7 onths ago. I went for 2 sessions. The second one was a week after the first and it was just to help with some of the cravings. I work in a holistic Dr.'s office, where we have a hypnotherapist. I'd say about 80% of the people that come in to quit smoking succeed. 100% of the people that actually want to quit succeed. It all depends on the persons willingness to try it.

Hypnosis is one of many viable options for those interested in quitting smoking.

In fact, a study conducted at the University of Iowa in 1992 found that hypnosis was the MOST effective treatment for smoking cessation as compared to other techniques (patch, gum, etc).

Researchers conducted a meta-analysis, which combines the results of more than 600 studies covering 72,000 people in the U.S. who participated in various cessation techniques. They found that subjects that underwent hypnotism had the highest success rate of quitting.

This is just one of many scientific studies that have been conducted regarding the effectiveness of hypnosis. Thousands of studies can be found on PubMed, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
