Accupuncture Question...?

Question:
Actually a couple of questions:

1) What does this actually feel like? Is it painful at all? How much?

2) I have residual pain from a baseball-related shoulder injury from almost 10 years ago. I've still never verified what the damage to the shoulder was, but I believe it was a torn labrum. Is accupuncture effective only on specific types of injury/pain or is it generally effective.

Answers:
1) It feels like a slight pinprick going in, not even that bad. While the needles are in, you lay down on your back in a nice quiet room and rest. At that time you'll feel some tingling and warmth. After about 30-45 minutes, the needles are pulled out quickly. The most uncomfortable part of the whole thing is when the acupuncturist swabs the points where the needles have been with rubbing alchohol to prevent infection. Stings a little.

2) It's generally effective for lots of things, but particularly good for muscle-related aches and pains, such as back pain, sciatica, tension headaches.
Acutually, chinese medicine has a unique understanding about painful conditions:

Acupuncture is effective in pain killing by unblocking the energy channels, however, Chinese medicine holds that it only fits acute types. For the chronic ones, it is necessary to combine with other treatment methods, such as cupping, moxibustion or topical applications.

Cupping is suitalbe for pain accompanying with swelling, limb heaviness or joint stiffness.

Moxibustion is for dull pain accompanying with coldness and numbness.

Topical application usually applied with massage therapies and can achieve deeper and more sustainable effeccts.
First, i am going to your second question. If your movement in any direction is oke, so your residual pain is not being a problem. But if you feel extremely or severe pain in specific direction, you may go to orthopaedic specialist to make sure by X ray ed. Acupuncture also need X rayed film to make sure the specified location of problem. Professional acupuncturist believe X rayed is more accurate than analysing. Acupuncture is effective for nerve, tendon, muscle, skin problem relief, not for severe injury. So get x rayed first, then come to professional practitioner. Don't worry, because they have medical code ethic. So if they cannot fix your problem, they may recommend you to another doctor, or ask you to find your private doctor

Now to your first question.
when you first get acupuncture, you maybe can astonished when needle come into your skin and tendon. It feel like small ant bitting just for awhile ( maybe 1-2 second). Then you feel something like tingling just for a while, (this time practitioner spin the needle to get reach appropriate location of nerve problem).
If you go to professional practitioner, you get less pain.
In my country, for 30 minutes acupuncture + 15 minute massage + Infra red treatment about 15 US$ ( tax included, medicine excluded).
It doesn't hurt much at all. It worked wonders on my neck pain and as far as I understand it is generally effective with most types of pain.
