I went to the chiropractor and he recommended going 3 times a week for a year- is this necessary or a scam?

Question:

Answers:
When I first started going to a chiropractor, she recommended that I come in for adjustments 3 times a week. HOWEVER, she said this was only necessary for three to four WEEKS, not a year. I actually agreed with her assessment, because I had some really messed-up problems such as chronic lower and upper back pain, lost range-of-motion in my neck, and various other things.

She kept me very informed about what my problems were, what she was going to do to help, and how long she estimated it would take. I didn't have to follow any of her advice, but I chose to, because everything made sense to me, and I really wanted to get my longtime pain and problems resolved. :)

Despite all the problems I came to her office with, I made a LOT of progress in that first month, just as she predicted. After that, I started going less often, perhaps 3 times a month. And then, I "graduated" to only 1 or 2 times a month. (She was OK with seeing me less often or more often; it was always up to me).

So, my point in all this rambling is that if your chiro says you should come 3X a week for a FULL YEAR. well. that chiro is most likely being dishonest and trying to squeeze extra money out of you. :( I can't be 100% sure, however, because I don't know WHY you chose to visit the chiro. If you have some serious problems with pain, movement, or disability, it might be necessary to see the chiro very frequently. But I STILL can't imagine any situation that would require seeing the chiro 3X a week for a year.

As the saying goes: "Something ain't right!"

Are you in serious pain? Then maybe. Otherwise it is a scam.
my brother has a bad back, and he goes a couple times a week says it really does him good.
Depends on the chiropractor. As with everything, there are good ones, and not so good ones. What he's asking does sound excessive though. You might want to go to a different chiropractor and get a second opinion. The good ones can bring a lot of relief.
I see a chiropractor twice a week for cirvical riduculitis. I also went to four different chiripractors for evaluation and to see what they had to say. All but one of them told me twice a week. So, my best advice is for you to get another opinion from other chriropactors.
YES!! Quite frankly.

Chiropractors? it's a load of bollocks anyway.
I would try another chiropractor and get a second opinion. No one should recommend treatment that takes that long! The best answer would be a treatment plan that will be reviewed monthly.

My uncle is a chiropractor and by what i understand if something does not look right you need to do what they say. its amazing how much they can help. My wrist and elbow dislocated easily and i went to my uncle 3 times a week for a month and noticed drastic results.
Bit of both, I saw one for a while, my spine wasn't correctly alligned, it helped a bit but only for a day or two after i saw him each time. It's v expensive. It's all about posture, try and stand taller even if it feels weird and you will feel better

I think he is scamming you. If you need to see him that regular than i feel you need to a regular doctor because it sounds like a medical problem.
The majority of Chiropractors are upstanding professional with a desire to help people. From my experience, the good ones will tell you the problem and do just what it takes to get you to %100. It usually takes from two to 4 visits a week, for 2-3 weeks, and then tapers off to as little as one a month. It really depends on the severity of your condition. To carry this regime on for a year, is probably related to the amount of insurance coverage you have. If you tell the Chiropractor that your insurance will not pay for these visits, you will be miraculously healed quicker. Invest $25.-$40.00 and see a second chiropractor. There really are a lot of good honest ones.
If you cannot afford 3 times a week, do not go 3 times, go at least 1 a week though. If he's a good chiropractor, it will help.
I have bronchial asthma. I hate conventional medicine. ( I had too much of it when I was a child). So, I used to see an Acupuncturist back in my home-country. In the States it happened so that I met a Chinese Qui-gong practitioner. I had bee seeing him for about a year ( once a week) . I think it greatly helped me.
I had to go to a chiropractor 3 times a week when I first went in for treatment. One of my vertebrae had gotten stuck in one spot. Doctor told me it had been stuck for a long time and my disc as a result got compacted. The bone was hitting my sciatica nerve. The backbone has a memory. You have to go several times a week to get it pushed back to where its supposed to be. The muscles surrounding the bone also have a memory. If you don't go 3 times a week the muscle will just pull the bone back to where its not supposed to be. I went 3 times a week for about 3 months. My pain is gone and I still go to the chiropractor once a week by choice now. I don't want that pain to come back. If I were you I would at least go 3 times a week for a few months. After that you will be able to decide for your self if a full year is necessary or not.
Chiropractors are not even doctors. No benefit, other that psychological, has been shown from chiropractic treatment. Go to a real doctor.
There are a couple of factors to consider here. First is the technique your doctor uses. I know Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP) recommends 3 visits per week for 8-10 weeks. This technique combines adjustments (to correct subluxations), traction (to restore the proper curve), and exercise (to strengthen ligaments so they can support the new posture) to gradually and safely correct postural problems. CBP is one of the leading techniques with the most scientific backing, and isn't a sham.

However, 3 times per week for a YEAR sounds excessive. I could understand if your doctor wanted you to come 3 times per week until your problem was corrected and the pain subsided, and then wanted you to come in, let's say, once or twice a month for maintanence care. So like I said, this proposed care seems like too much.

The other factors include your age (if you've had this problem for years and years, it would obviously take longer to correct), and the extent of your problem. Ultimately, you have to make the decision for yourself. If you are not comfortable with your doctor, you should find a new one. Ask friends and famliy for recommendations, or visit other chiropractors and see what they have to say about your situation. No matter what happens, please don't believe that all chiropractors are out to scam people out of there money. There are great doctors out there who truly want to (and do!) help people, who are honest and hard-working, and who are extremely knowledgeable in their field.
Try going to see an osteopath instead, I have had real success from that, and I have suffered chronic back pain for years.

I initially went twice a week for 6 weeks then once a week, I am now down to once a fortnight.

I went to a chiropractor before and they too wanted me there nearly every other day. It cost me a fortune (with little relief)
Everyone's spine is "off" a bit. A GOOD chiropractor's goal will be to NOT have to see you again! I suggest you shop around and don't be afraid to ask questions. Usually a chiropractor that specializes in sports medicine will be your best bet. Good luck!
Man, that's kinda tough- the way I see it is, you should go if you're uncomfortable- if it gets better, don't go back until you need to again. I knew a couple people who always had to go in for "adjustments" - it really didn't make sense to me that they went so much when they felt perfectly fine. (everybody wants your $$$)
a scam
Sounds like he is hoping to exploit a goldmine because he will only give you temporary relief from symptoms without actually dealing with the issue causing the problems. I've even heard of one chiro so "bad" that he's been struck off their own professional body and so is now only allowed to advertise himself as a spinal manipulation specialist. I wonder is he asking you to pay thousands up front for a bit of a discount on the entire course. Go see an osteopath.
It would be good to get a second opinion. Usually, they see you 3 times a week for 1-3 months and then start going down in visits. If it is a chronic thing, you may need to go in once every three months or if it flares up again, you may need to go in more often for a short time. You go in often at first to keep the spine aligned and then it seems to stay in shape and you can lengthen out the times between visits.
Sounds like a scam, 3 times a week is excessive. You could try an osteopath instead. They treat you and your back with your individual needs and body structure in mind. Chiroprators seem to try to get the spine in 'perfect' alignment, which for many of is just not how we are built.

A good practitioner will ask you to call as and when you need. I would always be wary of someone who says you need X number of treatments at first consultation as everybody reacts/heals differently and at different rates, so how can they possibly know how many you will need before they have seen how you react to at least a couple of treatments first.

But if this guy's not improved your pain/discomfort after a year - move on!
Scam ! All the quacks are thieves , liars and crooks. They will take your money and then cripple you ! Stay away from them
Chiropractors generally like to see you come back repeatedly and they are definitely into making money..that is why they got into the business. That is not to say that some do work wonders.
I would see a Chiropractor for a couple of weeks at 2-3X per week and then see how it goes and have him monitor your improvements. If there are no improvements or if they are very slight then find another chiropractor. I would also get him to recommend a good registered massage therapist that you could see a couple of times to augment his treatments. In Canada it is considered "Professional Misconduct" if a Registered Massage Therapist continues to treat a client if the client is not making any significant improvements with a treatment plan, which depending on the condition usually run from about 2 weeks to 1 month, more or less. Health care professionals are there to improve your health and if they don't they must refer you to someone who is. Good Luck and be in control of your own body!
Here's a good test to see if the Chiropractor is scamming you. Does he want you to pay the year up-front? Either your co-pay (Insurance) or your private pay? If so, get a second opinion.

My neighbor, a chiropractor, requests this from his patients. He claims it is so they make a commitment to their care. Hog wash!
I think three times a week is a little to much, I would have said twice a week for 3 months to see how it goes, then if it seems better drop down to once a week, you can always go back to twice a week if you need to. I would get a second opinion if i were you. at the end of the day it's up to you and how much you can afford to pay out each week.
I'm a firm believer in the value of chiropractics. Three times a week for a year does sound like a lot, though. Obviously, no one here can make an educated recommendation about whether it is needed. Your best bet is to get a second opinion from another chiropractor. Don't tell him/her what the first one said. That way he won't be influenced in how he responds.

After the chiropractor makes his recommendations, if there is a lot of deviation between the recommendations, THEN is when you tell him about what the first chiropractor recommended. Ask why his approach would be better than the other's. Then go back to the other and ask the same question. That will force them to defend their positions.

If possible try to find a chiropractor that your friends are using. Word-of-mouth testimonials from people you trust are invaluable.
It is probably necessary for his bank account. Go to your own doctor and see what can be done.
Well i would say that 3 times a week might be ness. for like a month at the most then you can limit the visit to once a week for a month or two then gradually go down in the number of visits. If your chiro knows what he's doing he won't need to work on you that much. To help you reduece your pain get a massage BEFORE your adjustment it will give you better results and your adjustment will last longer so you won't have to go to the chiro very much!

I'm a CMT
Get a second opinion, preferably from a chiro that someone you know refers you to. I have a friend that went to one that said the same thing yours did (after a bad car accident). She went to mine and he's seeing her once every 2-3 weeks. Not everyone knows what they're doing, and not everyone is honest. It never hurts to get another opinion.
