At your natural foods store you should be able to find Mullein oil. Often it has garlic in it. There is a brand called Wally's Ear Oil that is specific for ear infections. Herbs, Etc. makes one too. The Mullein helps with the pain and inflammation and the garlic is antibiotic. You can also use a garlic oil softgel, pierced w/ a clean needle and add that to the mullein oil.
This stuff feels better if you warm it in a teaspoon before applying. Keep it in your ear for at least 2 minutes. At night, use a cotton ball and try to sleep w/ the ear up.
While you're at the store, get 2 ear candles and an instruction sheet. These will help pull out the water and any yucky stuff your ear may be producing. Use one now and one in a few days.
Also use pure essential oil of lavender directly on your skin at the point of pain - like in front of the ear, below the ear lobe and behind the ear. (Don't put it in your ear.) This is anti-inflammatory and will help w/ pain and throbbing.
You are going to have to use ear plugs when you kayak. Buy the soft, waxy silicone ones that are specifically for swimming. If you inadvertently get water in your ear (like while shampooing), immediately put a few drops of vinegar in. Or buy and keep on hand a product specifically made for this - usually contains hydrogen peroxide, alcohol and citric acid. There's one called, I believe, Swim Ear.
