That's a great question. I am a certified aromatherapist and I own a stress management consulting firm and e-commerce website where we sell many products dealing with aromatherapy. I teach my clients about the positive effects of using essential oils for aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy is the science of using fragrant plant's essential oils (the purest essence of any aeromatic plant) for any therapeutic purpose. I tell my clients that aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years. The Greeks and Romans were the first to use aroma for therapeutic purposes, but the word "aromatherapy" was first founded in 1928 by a French Chemist, named Rene-Maurice Gattefosse when quite by accident (literally) he burned his hands in a laboratory explosion and quickly doused his burned hands in a vat of pure lavender oil. He soon found that the lavender helped ease the burn and scarring and coined the phrase "aromatherapy."
How it works: The essential oils of plants are made up of millions of tine particles which once diffused in the air or massaged into the skin, will quickly enter the blood stream via the nasal passages or small capillaries in the skin. From there they enter our limbic system in the brain, this is also called our mood center or pleasure center..each particle or aroma has a different effect on our mood and the perception of what is bothering us.
Examples of what different essential oils do: Here is a brief explanation of what some of the most popular essential oils do.
Lavender: is by far the most popular and least offensive aroma in as much as 97.8% of the general population. It is used primarily to help calm nerves and stress and promote rest and relaxation. It can work very effectively to help with insomnia, promoting a restful sleep. It is also used directly on the skin for mild irritations and scarring. It is one of two that is recommended to be used with babies and small children.
Eucalyptus: Used primarily for upper respiratory coughs and colds. This can be used in a shower or diffused at the bedside to help with congestion.
Tea Tree: This is a great anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-biotic medicinal oil. Diffuse it in general to help disinfect a room. It can be used "neat" undiluted on the skin for small scratches and insect bites.
Orange/Lemon/Lime: Any of the citrus aromas can be diffused for chronic fatigue syndrome or general lethergy. It helps to "wake up" increase focus and concentration. It is very clean and refreshing.
How do you use essentail oils: I keep talking about diffusing them..how do you do this? We use two kinds of diffusers.the safest is a cool air diffuser such as the Natura or the FanFuser. You simply drop a few oils on a dry pad and the fan will blow the particles into the air where you can inhale them. You can also massage oils directly on the skin.you must be careful with some oils because some are so strong they will need to be diluted into another carrier oil such as jojoba or avacado or coconut. You should always test an essential oil on a small patch of skin first and watch for any reaction such as redness or burning.
I have much more information on several different essential oils at my website. I hope this has helped.

What causes arthrisis and the meaning?
Aromatherapy, commonly associated with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), is the use of volatile liquid plant materials, known as essential oils (EOs), and other aromatic compounds from plants to affect someone's mood or health. The word was coined in the 1920s by French chemist René Maurice Gattefossé, who devoted his life to researching the healing properties of essential oils after a lucky accident in his perfume laboratory. (In the accident, he lit his arm on fire and thrust it into the nearest cold liquid, which happened to be a vat of lavender oil. Much to his amazement, the burn quickly healed without a scar.)
certain oils are very specific in rejuvenating yr senses. For instance lavender oil helps in soothing yr nerves by interacting intimately with yr 'feel -good' area of yr brain.Garlic aroma is an aphrodisiac since it targets the hypothalamus .Peppermint oil helps you be confident ,again by stimulating the cerebral emotional perception areas of yr brain.basically, aromatherapy unwinds you by relieving stress via yr brain!
