Glucose test in pregnancy?
Question:
Answers:
I am hypoglycemic and refused to take the test when I was pregnant. I was eating organic whole foods and had no signs either. Now that I have spent years working in medical offices, I understand that docs do this type of test as a precaution for their liability, not for your health concerns. It is standard and they don't have to suspect that you have diabetes. I don't blame them, people are sue crazy.
For me, I changed care providers to a wonderful midwife who agreed I was in no danger, and I was very pleased with her professional care!
Additional: The signs are the same as for diabetes; you may notice that you're more thirsty, hungry, or tired than usual or that you have to urinate more frequently. Of course all of those signs are part of pregnancy also.
If you are obese, a family history of diabetes, the doctor found sugar in you urine (good to ask) or have high blood pressure, then you probably want to go ahead and have the test.
You can still have it and not show any signs...
The doc would not order it if he didn't suspect gestational diabetes. They don't order that test for no reason at all. Get the test done as it for yours and the baby's health and safety. Also it is no worse than drinking several high sugared soda's or something else high in sugar or even eating lots of donuts etc. The doc is looking out for the health of you and the baby so get it done.
It is a common test for pregnant women. I tested borderline with the regular test and they went ahead and did the glucose tolerance test on me. There is no harm to you or the baby. The Dr would not have have you do it otherwise.
Many people won't show any signs until late in their pregnancy when it becomes dangerous. They do it early on to catch it as to monitor the health of the mother and child more closely.
They order this for every pregnant woman whether or not they are showing signs. I never did take mine either. I knew what to look for considering I have diabetes on both sides of the family. They can't make you take it if you really don't want to, but if you are high risk or start to show any signs it may be a good idea. Though after the delivery of the baby your sugar level will go back to normal. I think you need to do what you feel is right in this situation. If you don't feel comfortable then don't do it. They do have those sugar meters and you can do your own monitoring at home too.
They are simply doing a standard test for Gestational diabetes. No need to worry, but some women get diabetes during the pregnancy and it often resolves after delivery. If it is found that you do have it, you will once again be tested about 6 weeks after giving birth.
