Are there any reasonably safe, effective and legal ways to induce hallucinations?

Question:
Again, I stress - SAFE and LEGAL! :-)

Answers:
I don't know about halluciations, but if you do deep meditation you will see visions.
Fasting is perhaps the oldest way
i don't think so but why would you want to induce hallucinations in someone?
toadstools work like magic
have a really good imagination.
Only by taking doctor prescribed medicines that you may be allergic to. I know people who have been given wrong medications or too strong a prescription and had hallucinations.

I haven't heard of any safe and legal way other than that. This isn't the 60's anymore and the government isn't experimenting with LSD on test subjects.

However LSD is derived from a fungus that grows on rye and if you know your history, people suffered ergot poisoning and were accused of being witches or werewolves (In France or Britain) from ingesting this and "tripping out" so to speak.

There are lots of organic materials that will create an hallucination but I don't think anyone should actively be seeking any type of mind altering trip. Life is enough of an hallucination in itself.
Fast for 5 days...you'll have them...they might not be fun though...
Fasting long enough to induce hallucinations is not safe, and magic mushrooms are not legal. Just watch the Teletubbies a lot and eat way to much sugary junkfood - that's what my kids do.
Otherwise, Yoga and meditation would be the best (I'm serious about that part). No reason to beat up your brain. If you learn about meditation and practice it, you will definitely have out-of-body like experiences, and they will make you calmer and more serene, instead of crazier like drugs
One might consider taking a very large hammer and crush one's own feet with said hammer.

Chances are one would see lots of pretty colors and stars.

Of course, I don't personally recommend anyone doing such a thing... ;-)
Thats a tough one.

---> Do some research, get familiar w/ different types/names of cacti and start quietly looking around at local plant stores, nurseries, farmers markets, etc<-----

Pipi08 already mentioned ergot fungus which grows on rye bread.

"Reasonably safe" pretty much rules out scavenging for mushrooms (Although I'm fairly sure it would be technically "legal" to seek out and ingest hallucinogenic mushrooms as long as there was no trespassing involved-It's illegal in most areas to buy, sell or possess hallucinogenic mushrooms. . .but not to consume them.)

You should also definitely check out meditation and native american sweat lodges/sweat trances.
Actually, liquid cold medication like Nyquil. Take just enought o feel a little bit high, go to bed and have some wild dreams.
eat a tablespoon or two of nutmeg
Go without sleep for five days. You brain will start short-circuiting, and you'll have a heckuva good bout of hallucinations.

I was admitted to a hospital with multiple kidney stones blocking my ureter. Because I was on a PCA pump, my vital signs had to be monitored every twenty minutes... which meant I was never left alone by the hospital staff long enough to sleep.

By the fifth day, I was having visual, aural, tactile, and proprioreceptor (location of parts of the body) hallucinations. It was fascinating.

How safe is it? I lived through it, obviously. But I had no long-term effects.
