Is kava worse for your liver than alcohol?

There was a big fury over this topic about 5-6 years ago. The concern came from a study done that suggested that the Kavalactones (active ingredient) in Kava Kava caused liver damage. What the study also said, but was ignored by the media (this was when Kava was REALLY hot in the natural products world), was that some of the people being tested ALSO either had a history of drinking or had a pre-existing liver condition. The study also stated that they used several different Kava products in the study, some of which used Acetone to extract the active ingredient from the root, which raises the question: Could Acetone have effected the results of the study by causing liver damage?
All of the follow-up research that I've read has either not been able to replicate the results of the study, or has disproved it altogether based on using a more controlled group of people, with kava products that used either alcohol or water to extract the active ingredient instead of harsh chemical solvents. The fact is, native cultures in Vanuatu and the polynesian islands have used Kava on a daily basis for hundreds of years without liver problems.
That said, it is still recommended that people who already have a liver condition do not use Kava based on the potential that it could worsen the condition. I still use it from time to time when I get stressed out and I'm not concerned in the least, as long as I know I'm using a good one.
high does are said to be toxic according to some so called studies. I dont know. I used to take it alot , it makes you sleepy. Alcohol I would say is worse.,And so are the side effects.
