Ingesting more acid for heartburn is usually not a good idea. I've been told (and found for myself) that the best food to use for acid reflux is milk, 2% or higher. It has to be at least 2% because anything lighter than that has had all the milk fat removed, which is what sooths the acid reflux. Before modern medicine, the only know EFFECTIVE treatment for heartburn was something called the Sippy Diet, which basically had you eating a non acidic diet, and drinking small amounts of milk or cream every hour or so.
I'm on meds for my AR and find that if I have heartburn between dosages, the best way to sooth it is by drinking a large glass of 2% milk.
No, it won't help. Try one of the following supplements
1.Calcium carbonate, a well-established short-term remedy for heartburn, is the main ingredient in several popular antacids.
2.Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) is a highly regarded herb used as a demulcent (an agent that soothes and coats mucous membranes) and has been shown to be as effective as the drug cimetidine (Tagamet) in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease.
3.Aloe vera juice can provide quick, soothing relief by reducing acid output and soothing and coating the mucous membranes.
4.If you're troubled by frequent indigestion or if food feels "heavy" on your stomach, consider taking some digestive enzymes with each meal. Double the recommended dose if you've eaten an especially large meal.
5.A pleasant alternative to coffee after a meal is a cup of warm herbal tea--chamomile, ginger, peppermint, marshmallow, meadowsweet or slippery elm--which has the added benefit of relieving heartburn discomfort.
6.Stay up at least three hours after eating your last meal or large snack before going to bed.
7.Raising the head of your bed several inches will put gravity to use in preventing reflux during the night.
8.Chewing gum can provide short-term heartburn relief by stimulating the production of saliva, which dilutes and flushes out stomach acid. Drinking a glass of lukewarm water after a meal may produce a similar effect.
I use apple cider vinegar with mother, I purchase it in a health food store. Yes, it does work.
no! you are not digesting your food.you need digestive enzymes.
An alkaline diet might help acid reflux.
If you have GERD, it won't help. The acid in the vinegar will make your GERD act up. The honey should not hurt it in that dosage, though. See your doctor or an herbalist, please, so many serious conditions have this as a precursor.
amembal4444 has some wonderful suggestions, which I will be copying down to take advantage of in the future.
The most effective thing that I did to settle my stomach down was to stop eating white flour, white sugar, and high fructose corn syrup. Limited amounts of less processed sugar or honey are OK, but only if I don't make a habit of it. Whole grains are fine, and seem to have a calming effect on digestion. Also, I have much less trouble when I keep my stress levels down. If I let slip on either diet or stress level, I get an acid stomach.
Try alkaline. This was recommended by my homeopathic doctor.
Cabbage juice - shred cabbage and put in blender, strain and drink (it is very mild, like water from cooking veggies)
OR
Potatos, raw- chop, add a little water, put in blender, strain and drink. You can flavor with honey, but is also very bland.
These two foods will cause your stomach to produce the coating it needs to protect itself from acid reflux.
In the morning, before eating or drinking anything, drink 8 oz water. Rise up toes and come down on your heels quickly and forceably, so your stomach drops. Do this 11x. This will force the valve at the opening of your esophagus to close, and help prevent the acid coming up. (also recommended by doc).
Good luck!
don't eat a large meal within 4 hrs of bed time - elevate your head when sleeping and take 500 mg of organic magnesium before bedtime - chew it if you are have acid reflux.
cut sugar out of your diet - sugar throws off your natural digestive things.
some people need acid - but acid does not work for me at all - apple cider vinegar just aggravates reflux in me.
