Dong Quai vitamins for female hormone regulation: If I skip out on some days, will it mess with my hormones?
Question:
I have some supplements, I just don't want to take them everyday. Just every other day or every few days, and I need to know if this will cause hormone disruption or not...
Answers:
No, it's not like a synthetic hormone. Some women only take it during their period for cramps. But the better question is, why are you taking it in the first place and why do you only want to take it every other day?
Also, it's not a vitamin, it's an herb, and it's best if used in an herbal formula prescribed by a licensed acupuncturist that is balanced for your particular needs.
Herbs are like medicine, they can be helpful if you need them, but should be prescribed by someone who knows what they're doing. Just because you can buy it at the local health food store, doesn't mean it's OK just to take it. You need to know why you're taking it, how much, how often, when to stop, etc.
As far as the Dong Quai, it's best to use the real thing because supplements have been processed and preserved in order to make it to retail stores. Find a pace to get fresh herbs because a lot of what is needed can be lost due to processing or even being stored in trucks that get 130+ degrees. Many compounds breakdown when heat is applied to them. Dong Quai needs t only be taken around your cycle, I would say 3-4 days before and after but there many other benefits from his herb as well.
As far as supplements go, you may only digest 40-60% of them because of the binders. If I have to ever take a pill that isn't time-released, I chew the pill but take less than recomended. Good luck.
