With so many natural supplements on the shelves which ones are actually beneficial to take?

Question:
St. John's wart, Echinacea, Fish oil, etc.

Answers:
It depends on your current health situation. If you go to a homepathic doctor, he/she could recommend supplements for you. There are many that do work to help various issues. IE Red Yeast - lowered my overall cholestrol and a friends
Good luck!
Virtually none. On the plus side, most don't do anything...so there's few side effects.
be careful with all of these because they can be as potent as prescription meds but they are handed out by much stupider ppl. if you are taking ANY other meds run past your GP exactly what you are taking - sometimes adjustments need to be made. St John's wort interacts with a huge amount of meds in bad ways!
How about trying mangosteen juice(Xango). The fruit grows in sub tropical climatesin SE Asia and contains more than 40 different Xanthones, the highest concentration of these anti-oxidants found in nature. Now with over three decades of scientific laboratory studies to support its use. The mangosteen fruit may help with whole body wellness, diabetes, heart and blood vessels, cancer..many more.Need help email me.
Vitamin B. It helps your body regulate stressers, and if it doesn't need it you simply flush it out of your body when you urinate.

You can tell if you need it by looking at your tongue. It there is that crevasse in the middle, you need to take a couple B tablets. If your tongue is smooth, you are probably fine.
To truly benefit from any supplement, you first need to know what you need to treat.
Example: St. John's Wort is generally used for depression/mood swings or the blues. It is also used to speed healing of internal injuries and broken bones.
Echinacea is an immune system booster and can be used for anything from treating a cold, wording off allergies and a long list of things.
Fish oil-contains Essential Fatty Acids that can lower LDL cholesterol's which are needed to fight off free radicals, break down fats for metabolizing that in essences become energy. It protects the heart and the list goes on.
If you know what you want to treat, then you can determine which supplement would work most effective for you.
All of the above are beneficial...if you need them.

Of those three, almost every person in the US would be better off taking fish oil. Almost no one eats enough fish. Plus there is the concern about mercury in fish. Most fish oils are purified to remove the mercury.

Echinecea should only be taken for short times periods to build up the immune system.

St. John's wort is the most popular prescribed anti-depressant in Germany, where physicians are trained in herbs as part of getting their license.

Good luck and be well.

Um... St. John's Wart and Echinacea tend to interact negatively with a couple drugs, fish oil on the other hand is okay to take. I think Fish Oil is the best supplement overall as well as flaxseed oil.
Fruit and vegitables!

Most medical research shows that, with few exceptions, supliments are either useless (vitamin C and some others) or dangerous (vitamin A, betacaratene etc.). There are few or no cases where a healthy well nourished adult shold take supliments long term.

The few supliments which may be benificial are:
1. Female VEGITARIANS will need an iron supliment
2. VEGANS (male and female) will also need some other vitamin supliments, but i'm not sure which ask a doctor or diatitian
3. Pholate may be benificial for PREGNENT WOMEN, but has been shown to be dangerous for healthy adults
4. Zink and vitamin C may help you RECOVER from a cold, but is pretty useless to prevent colds and zink can be toxic if you have too much
5. Fish oil (and other omega 3 sources) may help with ADD and ADHD and a few other childhood behavioural and attention problems

Examples of the ones to AVOID, which can be dangerous, are:
1. Vitamin A can be very bad for your liver unless you are actually deficiant in it to start with (avoid multi-vitamins with vittamin A)
2. betacaratene may be carsinogenic
3. Many immunostimulatory herbs (like echinacea and others) can worsen allergies and asthma
4. Many herbal medicines have been shown to have high levels of mercury either as a contaminant or sometimes even deliberately
it depends who you talk to i get so many different answers it makes me sick ...... ll
