I am a level 2 practitioner. I had numerous experiences of strangers asking me if I did Reiki and when I asked someone about an experience I had during meditation, the teacher asked me if I did Reiki. I knew, after being asked so many times, that it is something I needed to explore for myself.
If you believe in energy healing, and some people do not, then you may want to explore Reiki more fully. Basically, Reiki works with a person's energy (we are all of us made up of atoms which are merely particles of energy). While doing Reiki either on yourself or another person, you can literally feel things (for me, I feel it in my hands) that tell you where there are problems. I have done Reiki on myself as a meditative practice. I have done it for my fiance who, after only a 30 minute session felt so very relaxed that he said he felt as though he'd had a massage.
Can Reiki cure diseases? I don't know any legitimate Reiki practitioner who says that it does. Reiki is meant to be a complementary form of healing. You would still need to practice a healthy diet and lifestyle which may or may not include more "traditional" forms of medicine. If you have cancer, Reiki can help your body go through chemotherapy so that the side effects are not as discomitting. It can also help reduce the chance of remission. There are professionals (MDs, RNs) who are Reiki practitioners, who use Reiki to help their patients in conjunction with traditional medicine. (See link below.)
There are books which claim that they can teach you how to do Reiki. This is inaccurate. I had read several books on Reiki and it was not until I was attuned by a Reiki master that I felt a difference during my meditation.
If you have not experienced Reiki for yourself, you may want to find a practitioner and have a Reiki session. You may find it very surprising. Afterwards, if you feel that the experience was a blessing to you, you may want to be attuned to level one so that you can begin practicing Reiki on yourself. At level two you are able to do Reiki on other people (and animals) as well as distance healing sessions. Also, you may want to research the different schools of Reiki, be sure that the person from whom you get attuned has a lineage they can share with you, and be prepared to commit yourself to Reiki not only as a way to help yourself and others but as a lifestyle commitment you will make to and for yourself.
My mother in law is, although i dont really belive in it. She got a certificate from a class she took. i think it was like a week class and it cost her a bundle.
Fakey healers, oops, I mean Reiki healers don't need qualifications. They just wave their hands around you for ten minutes or so then charge you a hundred bucks.

I took classes in India, but you could do it by urself, there are books what will guide u thru the process

I first went to a weekend retreat and Diane Stein taught all 3 levels of classes. (author of Essential Reiki: A Complete Guide to an Ancient Healing Art (Paperback) She believes in spreading the knowledge and having people use it to heal everyone. Some people dont like her because she was the first to publish the sacred symbols and info to share.
I used it on myself and others for a while, but the skeptic in me let it go. Then a year later I went with a friend to a class done by Franciscan Monks. They too just wanted to share the knowledge and have people use it. This class atmosphere was much different - there were many nurses and business people.
I realized Reiki is not so esoteric, it is energy flowing and can be used for healing.
I've experienced the energy, the healing, the heat - and it works.
Scientifically speaking, you can see for yourself that if someone puts a hand on your shoulder while you are hooked up to a meter, that they will pass you energy. Your energy will increase. If you are feeling under the weather, it feels good to be held or touched. Cats and dogs respond like a magnet to Reiki.

Yes I am a Reiki Master and practitioner. I have always been interested in a more holistic healing method.
How I got introduced to Reiki...One day a wonderful lady came to me and told me about Reiki, I got quite a few free treatments from her and her students during their Reiki Shares. (Reiki shares are when a bunch of Reiki practioners of various levels as well as Reiki masters come together to share Reiki treatment sessions.) That was my introduction.
A few years later, I received a Level 1 Reiki Attunement for Usui Reiki.
Since then I have reached Reiki Master in several Reiki forms, the first being Usui Reiki. I have had many different Reiki Masters. I have learned over the years that a teacher appears when the student is ready. ;)
Also, a Reiki Master/Teacher usually has their lineage of the particular system they have taken. Although it has been my experience some are only partial.
Reiki works only if the person receiving it lets the healing energy in and accepts the healing. Reiki is not about forcing someone to heal it is about being the tool for The Divine healing energy to flow through so that another can connect to it and let IT help them heal.
Yes I am a Reiki Master Teacher, and it started amazingly, as I am very intutive and have deep spiritual connections, I found a book on Hypnosis and Reiki in an old book store, and in that book the name of the reiki symbols were mentioned, and their various uses for different diseases, but the symbols were not there. Even at that time I do not know how to operate computer. Than one day I am sitting near my dinning table watching the jug which was full of water, than i saw a face in that jug, and it was like watching TV. I tried to recall all the faces of the people I know in my past or have seen on Tv, but could not recognized him who he was. As I became aware of the picture it vanished from the jug. It was a strange experience for me. The other day my heart craved to go to some book store, therefore I went in the old book shop, and there was a book on Reiki, it was the first book I took out from the bookshelf, and as I turned it there was the same picture of that man I saw in the water jug, and He was Master Usui`s picture. I read that book with interest, and as I have no access to any reiki teacher I forgot about it, and my only son left for abroad, and for communication with him I learnt internet from one of his friends. And I surfed the net for Symbols, and I started drawing them on paper countlessly, and one day I was reading three months old news papers, where I read an advertisement of Reiki class, with a phone number. Thanks God the class was still on, and they were offering free healings on Thursdays, after attending two three classess and learning to meditate, I thought of my hip pain, and asked the Master to give me reiki. He asked one of his old students to give me distant reiki, as being muslim a man is not allowed to touch women, who is not his spouse. And that fellow just looked at me, and told me that he had build a cord and reiki will continue to flow , and i be healed from my fifteen years hip pain, and it was such a mirical happend to me that I slept so comfortible without any pain, and walking became so easy for me. This miriculous healing experience led me to get attunements, and deep knowledge about this Divine Energy. Now in four years I have done my Master Teacher level, and my life, my attitude towards life every thing changed dramatically. And everything in life appears so beautiful and full of life, that I think myself lucky to come in touch with this energy, I am so grateful to Master Usui who introduce this forgotten light into our lives. I am grateful to my teachers, and to my collegues, and to my students and patients, who come to me for sharing and caring too. I am grateful to all ascended masters living or departed ones who brought us these higher levels of conciousness, and togetherness, and taught us to live for giving and receiving .Try to be attune to this divine energy , heal yourself and the others, Love, Light and Peace for all.
