Is there something I can take other than zoloft?

Question:
I become a complete psycho a week or two before my period. zoloft does help, but wondering if there is any other options.

Thanks!

Answers:
Anti depressants take about 4 weeks to actually begin having an effect on you so I do not think that your doctor would be prescribing you zoloft just for that. There are a range of more natural options that can stop the manic stuff that happens. B6 taken every day and the 2 tablets for the 2 weeks leading up to the period works really well. (I have been on zoloft for about 2 years and having it constantly in your system is not good, it actually stops your brain from producing the seratonin that controls the behaviour. B6 is much better.) It may also be an idea to take the B6 as a Multi B Complex as If you take it singularly, it tends to decrease the other B group vitamins, and all B group vitamins are great for stress and anxiety issues. Have a chat to your local health food store or naturopath
What u are going through is normal and has to do with the drop in progesterone just before your period begins. Women all seem to feel moody and such just before their cycle.

I suggest Xanax or Paxil... you may also want to do a internet search there are hundreds more anti depressants out there today

Instead of taking medications, you might be better served if you try breathing excercises or do a search online for mind and body work"... they usually have suggestions on what to do.

-Try going for a walk, watching a movie, reading a book, or finding something to do that you enjoy. For me, when I feel angry or like you describe, I find something busy to do, even sex, it works!
I think it is odd your Dr would give you Zoloft to take only once a month. If you are taking it everyday for a problem you have only once a month, you might want a second opinion.

There are lots of options out there for women these days whose hormones vary widely every month. Ask your doctor about those options, or get a second opinion.

Either way, don't stop takin the Zoloft without a doctors supervision. I did that once, it was very, very bad.

One other option you could try is St. John's Wort or Sam-e. Make sure you have plenty of iron & potassium in your diet, or you can take suplements. Iron will help with the blood loss, & potassium will help with cramps. Make sure if you take a potassium supplement make sure it has magnesium in it so that your body will be able to assorb it. Avoid caffine, it screws with your hormones & makes your cramps worse. Excercise always helps. I know it is hard to get motivated around that time, but even a 20 min. brisk walk will help.

You should see if there are any Homopathic doctors or nurse practictioners in your area. They will be able to help.
