"is spirulina usda approved for human consumption?"?
Question:
Answers:
Technically, it's safe for human consumption (or it wouldn't be on the market)... but because the FDA doesn't approve or deny any supplements aside from general vitamins and minerals (those that have an RDA), they aren't "approved".
It's not a "multivitamin" per se... it's a supplement that has a lot of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, proteins, amino acids, and Chlorophyll, though. There are a lot of customers that get this for general health and some that have told me it helps a lot for certain ailments that they have.
yes...it is a great source of protein (equivilent to beef in protein and iron) and high in iron and vitamins...it is considered a dietary supplement so it is not regulated by anyone unless it is certified organic. I get mine from NOW comapany...available in pill, caplets and powdered form.Yes it is great for human consumption.
they sell it in holland and barrett so i guess it has to have passed some sort of check first!
probably, its so widely available. a wonderful product. check out blue green algae.
yes, it is just algae. It is used as a fortifier in many foods and sometimes as a sweetner. It is also used as a natural food dye.
We eat seaweed and such all the time with sushi rolls, etc...
it is full of really good nutrients...but the taste is AWEFUL! it comes in a powder that you sprinkle on foods, but I would suggest you just buy it in a pill form! :-)
Cheers on taking control of your health!
It is a food ingredient found in many foods sold in the US. Usually they are nutritious drinks and powders. As it is a natural food, it would only be outlawed by the FDA (the USDA would have nothing to do with it) if it was regarded as either a controlled substance or an unnecessary food additive.
For example, the FDA believes that Brewers Yeast is not a valid ingredient for food so the Australian Vegemite is technically illegal in the US.
However Brewers Yeast is sold in other ways and can be sold as a dietary supplement and is protected by the DSHEA Act of 1994. It just can be used as an ingredient in processed food.
