Drugs companies main reason for developing and selling new drugs is to make money. The drug industry is a multi billion dollar industry. Remember that when next you are tempted to waste dollars at the chemist. [I do realise that there is sometimes a need to take medications and I have been known to pop the odd panadol}
Look around you, especially if you're in the US. It's because people are fatter than ever and there is a need and a consumer demand for the products, not that they're good for you or work.
