Mucous is a slippery substance constantly produced by the specialised cells called " Goblet Cells" of the mucous membrane.
Mucous has got many function in our body.
It keeps the inner surface of a body cavity(oral cavity) and a organ smooth and slippery, hence trauma from various sources reduced. Eg; while chewing the food.
The mucous does also posses antiseptic property as, it has the enzyme called lysozyme which, predominantly kills certain types of bacteria.
The mucous which is secreted within the nasal passage and respiratory passages trap the dirts and microorganism hence, further transmission down to the tract is avoided.
