More natural ways to avoid constipation?

Question:
My niece's parents have been adding mineral oil to her drinks... but I would also be interested in foods that may help her... ones to avoid and ones that might help her be regular?

Answers:
Often a huge factor that causes constipation in children is eating milk products. Ask them to put her on a dairy-free diet for two weeks and see if there's a difference. Also, drinking lots of water helps with constipation... as does eating fibres like oats (I'm sure she wouldn't object to eating more oatmeal cookies or granola bars made of oats!)
How old is your niece? If she is a baby, you could add a little Karo syrup to her bottles. If she is a toddler, give her dried prunes or very cold prune juice. If she does not get much soda pop, give her a little Dr. Pepper. Make sure she is getting plenty of water! Good Luck
More fruit and veggies, almonds apples, pineapples, rhubarb, add some flaxseed to breakfast cereal, whole grains, grapes, avocados, beans, lentils, prunes, dates, figs, anything high in fiber should help. Tea should be avoided, it is rich in tannins. Tannins bind stools and hold back bowel movements.
try to give her a a papaya fruit..or mango..so she can poff
Lots of water and fiber
Drink coconut milk. Fresh coconut milk has an extremely powerful laxative. Don't drink too much, though, it could dehydrate you.

Eating Foods rich in insoluble fiber, like leafy vegetables, beans, peas (especially in the pod), fruits, whole grains, etc. can help clean out your colon and make it easier to go. Also, if you eat mostly fruit for meals, your bms will be really squishy and pass easily. It's gross but it works.
Abdominal massage: have your neice's parents schedule an infant/child massage, stating constipation as the primary reason. Her therapist can show perform and even show them how to do specific techniques at home to help her belly issues in a safe, healthy, drug-free (and mineral oil-free) way.

In a 2006 Palmer Chiropractic study of an 8-year-old boy suffering from chronic constipation since birth with no relief from laxatives, high fiber diet, and a high fluid intake, the boy received "dramatic" relief from clockwise abdominal massage two times per week.
