Is marihuana, pot classed as a narcotic?

Question:
I heard pot smokers talking about pain pills being bad because they are a narcotic. Isn't pot a narcotic?

Answers:
No it's not a narcotic. Narcotics are opiates, heroin, and cocaine

Marijuana is a controlled substance.
it is
it's a barbiturate
Yes, and you can get arrested for it.
yes!!!
no, it's a depressant and a hallucinogen. it's psychologically addictive, but not physically addictive. but I agree with you. if you smoke pot, you shouldn't put down pain pills. I think they do that to justify their use of a controlled substance.
Marijuana is actually considered a schedule 1 (1 being the worse) narcotic and is placed in the same category as LSD, PCP, Heroin and other drug that are considered to have no medicinal value.

A cool little bit of trivia, Cocaine is actually considered to be a schedule 2 narcotic as the government feels that it acceptable for medical treatment. Aspirin and caffeine are schedule 3 so you have a frame of reference.

The following paragraph is posted on the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) website :

Marijuana is a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). Schedule I drugs are classified as having a high potential for abuse, no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or other substance under medical supervision.
no its not. narcotics are opiates (from poppies) and marijuana is the correct spelling :-)

It is classified as a narcotic by our government, though not really so. But, by our governments laws it is considered a narcotic.
In U.S.legal context narcotic refers to opium, opium derivatives, and their semi-synthetic or fully synthetic substitutes "as well as cocaine and coca leaves," which although classified as "narcotics" in the U.S. Controlled Substances Act are not chemically narcotics. Contrary to popular belief, MARIJUANA IS NOT A NARCOTIC. Cannabis is a schedule l controlled substance.

Cannabis has legal medical uses in some states in the U.S. so there is alot of controversy about its placement in Schedule I. California is probably the most well-known states that use medical cannabis, it has been used to help chemo patients and people suffering from AIDS and other immune deseases. Smoking isn't always the way it is prescribed though they sometimes use THC in pills. There are two medicines out there called Marinol and Sativex used for dieting.

To be more personal, I believe, Marijuana is only a Schedule l Controlled Substance because it caries a huge bias. There are many illegitimate reasons why pot is illegal. It isn't a horrible drug , that was only fuelled by great propaganda in this country. There is no reason why this herb should be illegal and I will fight my life through to undo the deciet and lies surrounding it.
no it is not
No. Narcotics are cocain and heroin and other stimulates. Marijuana is not a narcotic.
No.
