Natrol Melatonin 1 mg Tablets Time Release. But I have an extreme allergy to benadrly. I think its and Antihistamine in it. So would Melatonin be safe for me? If not, what else would?
Answers:
melatonin is a hormonal neurotransmitter. If you're not low in melatonin, it won't do much for you
Yes, Melatonin would be safe as long as you are not allergic to B vitamins.
I am sorry you are allergic to Benadryl (diphenhydramine) because it is usually given for allergies.
I know of some who swear by Melatonin. Just read the ingredient on the bottle first.
If you are not allergic to any of the ingredients in Melatonin, take it, it does help. You will feel relaxed the next morning and not drugged.
Melatonin is an effective sleeping pill. Taking low dose of melatonin on a nightly basis at appropriate sleep times allows the body to naturally adapt to altered day and night patterns.
What to consider before using melatonin
supplement?
Most melatonin supplements (even those called natural) are produced synthetically and are safe to buy. They're identical to natural human melatonin. However, be wary of melatonin products derived from animal glands; they may contain dangerous impurities.
The use of melatonin derived from animal pineal tissue may carry the risk of contamination or the means of transmitting viral material. The synthetic form of melatonin does not carry this risk.
In Canada, Britain, France, and a number of other countries, melatonin is classified as a drug and is available by prescription only.
Dosage -
For insomnia: Take 1 to 3 mg before bedtime.
For jet lag: Take a 3 mg dose on your day of travel, followed by 3 mg before bedtime for the first three or four nights at your final destination.
For shift work: Take a 3 mg dose at your desired bedtime (at 8 A.M., for example) after working a night shift.
Guidelines for use -
To combat insomnia, stick to a precise schedule, taking supplements at the same time every evening. Begin with the lowest dose and increase it as needed.
Possible Side Effects -
No serious risks associated with melatonin use have been reported. In one study, patients who took very high doses (6,000 mg nightly) for one month had no major side effects. But long-term studies of six months or more are lacking.
For most people, melatonin causes drowsiness 30 minutes after taking it. This effect may last for several hours, so you should not drive or handle heavy machinery during this time. Other side effects can include headache, stomach upset, lethargy, or disorientation. Some individuals report that melatonin can cause fuzzy thinking upon waking, or vivid and sometimes unpleasant dreams, and even make insomnia worse. Others find that the effects wear off quickly with continued use.
i also have a bad reaction to benadryl and some other antihistamines. i also have sleep problems longterm. i found that although it is a prescription most doctors will prescribe vistaril. it can be taken longterm. is relatively addiction free. and although is a antihistamine like benadryl does not have the bad reactions.also does not seem to interfere with dream sleep. i also have used unisom over counter but had the side effect of dizziness which i don't like.
