What is the dosage of prescription strength folic acid?

Question:
I have centrum that has 400mcg and another pill that has 800mcg..

Answers:
Standard presciption dose is 1mg which would be 1000mcg. It's often used in the treatment of chronic alcohol abuse.
Published studies show that taking 400 mcg of Folic Acid a day can cut Spina Bifida risks by 70%.

One researcher, who has studied Folic Acid for over 25 years, was quoted in the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association, as recommending 400 mcg as the optimal dietary amount. She has, however, tested dosages as high as 1,000 mcg for extended periods of time and has demonstrated it to be totally non-toxic. That being said, her 25 years of study have not show this level to be necessary for supporting optimal health.

The FDA even chose to add Folic Acid to the list of dietary supplements added to white flour in 1998. The result was a drop of Spina Bifida by 30% in the US. The FDA made this choice due to the overwealming data showing that everyone is at least partially deficient in this critical nutrient.
5 mg daily. folic acid should not be given before a dignosis has been established because it is indicated for deficiency durig pregnancy, anemia and other illnesses.
