Taking niacin is rather brutal. The time release stuff is very liver toxic so stay away from that, the no-flush does not do much so that is out. Only the real straight stuff does the trick. I use the 3.00/100 tabs at Walgreen's. The problem is is that it will cause major GI upsets, and flushing. It is very tough to take. I would never niacin with the Vytorin because they both work in the liver. Stick with the Vytorin and drop the niacin. Or talk to your doctor about adding Niaspin. This is a medical form of niacin, much easier to take and is often mixed with other meds. Or you may be able to substitute for the Vytorin.
Please never stop a medication without consulting your MD. I know there are alot of advise givers with holistic beliefs and claim that vitamins can cure you, but if that were so then you would be able to change your diet and cure yourself. There are diseases of the liver and cardiovascular system that you are born with and you need medication to correct. I know a lady who cut all the fat ate mostly veggies and ran 5 miles almost daily and still had a cholesterol of 300 +. You see genetics do play apart and vitamins can not cure you. Actually they only help you and maintain you you stop them and the problem is still there and worsens. Just like hair dye they wear off.
Check with your doctor before changing any prescribed drug use.
Niacin can raise blood pressure and increase circulation, so you should be careful, it's not just a diet supplement.
