What is the best coral complex for osteoporosis on the market? I'm in Europe so I have to buy online.?

Question:
What is the best way to assimilate it? Which supplement will help?

Answers:
Answerman is right - calcium citrate is the appropriate form for optimal absorption. I don't know if you can get the fortified OJ he talks about - it may be an American thing (natural OJ doesn't have calcium citrate or calcium hydroxide, the kind they use in these fortified juices).

Cheap is best; don't fall for the designer shellfish/coral trend of the moment. You'll pay a lot for something you can't really absorb.

If you are in northern Europe, getting sufficient sunlight (except in summer) may be an issue. Thus, you might be a bit vitamin D-deficient. In that case, get the calcium citrate with vitamin D. Citracal makes a fine product, but there are cheaper generics.

Plan to take about 1 gram daily, more if you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Work with your physician to determine the best dose. He/she may also want to add more vitamin D than you can get in a supplement. This avoids the downsides of bisphosphonates (Actonel, Fosamax, etc.).

It doesn't hurt to take some magnesium as well, since it is also part of the bone matrix. But do avoid soft drinks (high phosphate) and a fatty or high-fiber diet (may limit calcium uptake). You can take your supplements with a meal that is lower in fiber to avoid forming calcium complexes with the fiber.
Coral calcium is simply limestone or calcium carbonate. This a poor form for absorption but it works great for heartburn that is why it is the stuff in tums. Take calcium citrate, much better absorption. Also the calcium in orange juice is very well absorbed.
For osteoporosis, make sure the person checks their pH to make sure they're not too acidic or alkaline and should avoid foods that make them too much one way or the other. Natures sunshine has a really great, pure and natural coral calcium but also a Calcium magnesium (magnesium is needed to absorb calcium.) A good website to check out is www.mynsp.com/kandismm
